Frangible 101

Everything we get asked in the comments

What frangible ammo is, how it compares to FMJ, how to shoot steel up close without getting hurt, and whether it belongs in your carry gun.

What is frangible ammo?

A frangible bullet is made from metal powder, usually copper, pressed and bonded into the shape of a bullet. It shoots like normal ammo. When it hits something harder than itself, like steel or concrete, it breaks into small particles instead of staying in one piece.

That's the whole point: much less ricochet and much less back-splash than a solid bullet.

Shooting steel up close

This is what our videos show. Frangible lets you shoot steel at distances where FMJ would be dangerous. Closer still has limits:

  • Check the minimum distance from the ammo maker and the steel target maker. Follow whichever is greater.
  • Use rated steel (AR500 or better) with no craters or pitting. Damaged steel throws fragments unpredictably.
  • Angle the target down toward the ground.
  • Wear eye protection every time, and keep everyone behind the shooter.
  • Rifle velocities hit much harder than pistol. Respect the difference.
Watch our videos for the setup, not just the impact. The distances, the target angle and the eye protection are part of the lesson.

Indoor ranges and shoot houses

Frangible was built for training where a solid bullet has nowhere safe to go: concrete shoot houses, close-range steel, and indoor bays. Because it breaks up on hard surfaces and is usually lead-free, it protects shooters, staff and backstops. That's why law enforcement trains with it, and why your local indoor range may require it.

Suppressors

Frangible runs in suppressed hosts. Clean on your usual schedule, and check your suppressor maker's guidance for your caliber.

Can you carry frangible?

It's a real debate. Some people like how little it over-penetrates. Others want proven defensive loads with published test data. We cover both sides in our videos. Whatever you carry, pick a load you've tested in your own gun and trust.

FAQ

Will it damage my gun?

It's loaded to standard pressures and runs like normal ammo in most firearms. Check the box for your caliber.

Is it accurate?

Accurate enough for training and close work. Most people can't tell the difference at typical range distances.

What calibers can I get?

9mm, .223/5.56, 7.62x39, 300 BLK and more. See Where to Buy.

Why does it cost more than FMJ?

The bullet is made a completely different way, from pressed powder instead of a cast lead core. You're paying for what happens when it hits steel.
